Knowing the basic requirements for webhosting is essential if you want to be able to pick the correct kinds of hosting for you. Now, for those of you that are already fluent in webhosting this article will not be for you, but if you’re new to the game then these are the musts of hosting.

The main features of webhosting include space, bandwidth, sql database’s, domain management and few other small things that will be touched upon later.

Firstly you need to know about space

Webspace or disk space, depending on the webhosting provider, is one of the most important parts of webhosting, without disk space you would not be able to upload your files and therefore you could not actually host your websites. In terms of what it means it refers to the quantum of data that can be stored on the disk area offered by your hosting provider. The usual range can be anything from 10 MB to gigabytes worth of space and some hosting providers, although it’s more of a marketing gimmick, offer unlimited hosting (read the terms and conditions carefully in such cases).

The amount of space you will need will depend largely on the type of websites you will be hosting. Usually websites are comprised of HTML, XHTML or CSS these tend to take up little space with CSS using the least as it reused images and saves on loading times. With all websites the main bulk of a website will come from the pictures, videos, downloads and data, although usually only blogs, forums and similar get to a large enough data size to be of any significance. If you are going to use the site to allow people to download then you are best to look for a third party site to upload your files to and then simply provide a link as this will save you a lot of space.
