VPS Hosting, Is Consolidating Your Sites a Wise Idea?

One of the biggest motivators for deciding to get VPS hosting is that point when a webmaster thinks to himself; “I can’t keep track of all these sites on all these hosting accounts” when this happens the best answer is obviously go to VPS. However, if your sites are not only large in quantity but also in traffic then maybe even dedicated hosting might be the best choice.

When you decide to get VPS hosting in order to consolidate your sites you do need to think about the bigger picture. For example, if your server goes down that will usually mean that all of your sites will be down until you reboot the system or until you fix the issue, if indeed it is a bug. This could lose you a lot of sales (affiliate marketing) or clicks (Google AdSense) and visitors in general, who in turn may not want to go back to your site, may email you asking what the problem is or will just generally be annoyed.

Furthermore, there are, although unconfirmed, reports of having similar site son the same ip address as being bad for search engine optimisation, due to the shared ip. However, this has been criticised as many shared hosting sites use the same ip and those sites still gain high rankings (we will leave you to look into this in order to decide what you believe).

A final thing to think about is the time it takes to move all your sites, some sites are very temperamental (ecommerce sites especially) and a slightly newer or older version can quickly set the site into a bundle of corruptions. So be careful and take the good points with these possible negatives before you choose to move all your sites off to a single server.
