As shared hosting allows people to host their sites at a reasonable cost, hence many individuals have benefitted from it. The main drawback of the shared hosting is that you have to share the single server resources with the virtual neighbors. However, this is not a problem for the small and medium organizations. The lack of control over the system level software is the main limitation here. The other limitation being that you can choose neither the operating system nor you can compile the programs of your use.

VPS or Virtual Private Server is for those who want to have a greater control on the server environment. VPS, which is a physical server, is divided into several virtual machines each operating as a self-sufficient server. Each VPS has its independent OS, which can be customized according to the needs, but CPU, RAM and other physical resources are shared.

Through VPS, the administrator can access the root level of its virtual server, this act as an advantage of the VPS. Then if we look at the security aspects then also the VPS web hosting leaves behind the shared hosting as it is more secure. If anyhow, the hacker gets an access to the server of the shared hosting then all the websites of the particular server can be damaged by him. However, this is not the case in VPS hosting. Each VPS is hidden to others and cannot be accessed via each other.

VPS provides an affordable choice to dedicated hosting. Before deciding on the VPS host, find out the division of the resources, the number of VPS accounts on each server, operating systems available and the upgradation method.

The control provided by the VPS account can be disadvantageous if you have no knowledge of what you are doing. So, if you lack the knowledge of server administration and are not ready to learn it as well, then VPS in not the field for you.
