When is it Time to Make the Change to Dedicated?

When you start to build your online empire you may quickly find that your sites expand faster than you thought they would or that you would not own as many sites as you do. In both occasions you can end up becoming overwhelmed and lose control, furthermore if you are on hosting that’s lower than VPS, such as shared, you may find your account shut down for abuse reasons as shared hosting relies heavily on good neighbours.

So what makes dedicated so great/bad?

Dedicated hosting is seen as the best hosting for a few simple reasons; firstly you have a massive amount of space. This allows you to grow your website networks freely without worry or having to constantly check how much bandwidth you are using. The second good point is the bandwidth, this is obviously good if you have a taxing website and a lot of visitors a day. The final reason is the fact you have complete control, with shared you have very limit, if any control on what happens with your hosting, your basically paying for a file hosting site in some respects. However, when you make the jump to VPS then you find that you have a lot more freedom and actually have a degree of say in what you want, when to reset your own hosting and much more (see our various types of VPS hosting for more detail).

Now obviously dedicated hosting has more freedom than VPS, however, when you compare the server space, specifications and the price you can quite easily see that the amount of space takes some seriously large sites to fill in order to get your value. Furthermore, dedicated servers may come with more freedom, but unfortunately they usually come with less support as they expect you to know what you need to do, which makes VPS a good transition.

So before you rush into dedicated hosting think if the cost is worth it and if you have the time to learn how to manage you own hosting completely.
